CARMEN SABINA

I grew up surrounded by trouble and a bunch of rock and roll. With a drug addict father and a bipolar mother, everything at home felt surreal and unstable.

Always moving between homes and people, entering adult worlds too soon, where sex, drugs and freedom became part of an everyday life.

It feels like I never got into art, but just never left it. From sequins and glitter in school to art-making, it has always been there.

From some studies in music, and working across different disciplines such as painting, photography, poetry, film and dance, the life-art has always been my dearest one.

My practice is driven by an ongoing interest, almost an obsession, with human emotions, mental states and their abstractions.

I am drawn to what we call “craziness” and the line between instability and perception.

Love’s a Chess Game In her first individual exhibition, Carmen Sabina offers an intimate reflection on affective relationships as spaces of play shaped by tension and vulnerability.

Having grown up in constant contact with clinical environments, her practice does not emerge as an escape or a site of healing, but rather as an ongoing attempt to represent those fragile spaces where the human mind oscillates.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, she draws a parallel—across painting, ceramic, textile intervention and poetry—between romantic bonds and chess, revealing how relationships can shift into power dynamics in which emotional connection is gradually replaced by strategy.

The work does not seek to resolve these tensions, but to expose them.
